ELA
- This week our class will be finishing up the major differences between Poetry, Prose, and Drama. We have looked at each type of literary text in depth and can tell the major differences between the three. We also plan to act out a drama for the one of the third grade classes in the future to bring the elements of drama to real life!
- After testing on Poetry, Prose, and Drama, we will begin learning about the different type of Text Structures for Informational Text ( Cause and Effect, Problem/Solution, Description, Compare and Contrast, and Chronology). We will also learn how we can apply context clues to figure out the meaning of new words that may be unfamiliar to us!
Math
- This week in math we will be wrapping up with factors/multiples, and prime and composite numbers. The students have learned how to use a "Factor T" and a factor rainbow to find the factors of numbers. Students have also learned how finding the multiple of numbers is strongly related to their multiplication facts :-). We have also learned how area models can be used with factoring numbers.
- Next, students will be learning/using prior knowledge from third grade for area and perimeter. Students will learn how to find the area of rectilinear shapes, apply the formulas for area and find missing sides with a given area and perimeter.
- Students will also begin solving word problems with two steps!
Science
- In science we are learning about the Physical Properties of Matter: States of Matter, Magnetism, Solubility, Mass, and Density as well as Chemical Properties of matter! Students completed an experiment on last Friday 10/19 on changing a solid to a liquid! The students had a bag with chocolate chips and had to change the solid form of chocolate into a liquid by any means necessary! After finishing up the experiment and having their chocolate sit awhile, the students noticed that their chocolate was beginning to turn back into a solid! They were so excited to show and tell me why!
Social Studies
- Where on Earth is North Carolina??? We are studying Social Studies this week and will be discussing where we live. We will create a circle map with Earth, North America, North Carolina, our county and city to pinpoint where little ol' North Carolina is. Students will also review/learn where they are located (county/city/town) in North Carolina!
- Students have learned about the 3 regions (Atlantic Coastal Plain, Piedmont Region and Mountain Region) of North Carolina and what makes each region so unique! Students also had a small project in which they learned that North Carolina has 100 Counties, which counties lie in which region, where the three regions start and end, and the states that border North Carolina. They did this on their own personal blown up map of the state of North Carolina.
